Django Reinhardt's guitar work had always loomed in the background of jazz guitarist and violinist Art Johnsons influences, but it sprang forward in 1995 when Art formed the Cool Club Quartet. The Cool Club Quartet first performed at San Diego's Horton Grand Hotel on June 10, 1995. The group all consummate pros found their rehearsals prior to that date quickly bringing each musician to a collective wavelength. This tight team approach is needed to "bring off Gypsy Jazz with emotional feeling and a relaxed confidence that gets transmitted to the audiences."
After the 1995 date, each member went on to the variety of musical combinations and experiences that makes up the stuff of a professional career. All were involved with their own performing, teaching, composing, arranging, recording and touring. It was Art who got the idea to call the group back together. The group gave four stellar performances in San Diego. Bob Magnusson brings his world-class contribution to this Django-style homage, Chris Vitas executes his inspired violin solos over the top of some rock-solid rhythm guitar work of Bob Cartwright.
Enhanced CD (Includes audio tracks, plus a QuickTime video of the band performing live). The Cool Club Quartet is heavily influenced by the style of music created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in the 30s and 40s known as gypsy jazz. First release date: December 27, 2003. Label: DP Rrecords.
